This site was set up in reaction to the big issue of women online being trolled, harassed and threatened when they post their content online.
Many women have just stopped bothering to make content - and that's not ok. Like any other community, the internet loses diversity, potential and energy when groups are pushed away or excluded.
One such troll pointed out that they searched "feminist meme" to get the memes they'd use to try and intimidate other commenters. When we searched "feminist memes" we realised that most of them are actually anti-feminist and anti women memes. Digging a little deeper and it's clear that most people creating memes are guys. Unable to find a meme to retaliate with we created a few of our own. The troll deleted a comment and didn't reply on an another.
Are memes the answer to online harassment?
No, not at all, but sometimes when things are turning to shit, being hilarious and ridiculous is a great option.
So this site is about two things:
- Finding another strategy to keep your voice and not feel shut down; and
- Making sure women and girls are creating content and adding to the internet. Yes hilarious, ridiculous and lamely silly memes count. They count a lot.
Oh and we also want to make sure there are a lot more options when people search "feminist meme" in the future.
If you think this site is a good idea share it on twitter or Facebook. We can really quickly add a bunch of new functionality like ratings. If you want to get involved you can, firstly make memes and encourage others to as well; but if you have an idea for this cause we want to hear it. Facebook? Instagram? Resources for school students? This site is a collaboration so put your hand up and we will be in!
If you make a meme and tweet it use #feministmeme - we are keeping an eye on it.
